Threading tools play a critical role in a variety of machining, manufacturing and other applications. Superior threading tools are made from select micro-grain carbide and are CNC ground for superiority and consistency.

The best thread mills are made from carbide with a tin exterior to protect them for a maximum tool life and cutting speeds. Thread mills are useful because they are able to help you to thread different hole diameters with just one tool. Using the helical fule design allows sleek, faultless cuts and longer tool life. A reputable supplier will supply programming and technological assistance and provide custom designs to fit your application. Higher end thread mills make threads with the accuracy, dimension and high finish to persistently achieve tight fits.

To create internal threads, it?s necessary to drill the minor thread diameter to the right size. Next, set the thread mill to the appropriate depth. After that, mill one of the two the ‘X’ or ‘Y’ axis to the needed thread pitch diameter. Because of the little sizes and considering the difficult to cut material, it may be necessary to remove the material in several passes. It is always best to “arc-in” and “arc-out” when thread milling. Any “arc-in” and “arc-out” movements need to have a matching ‘Z’-axis action amidst the ‘X-Y’ circular moves. For instance, if the “arc-in” is greater than 90 degrees, the ‘Z’-axis ending point must be 1/4 of the thread pitch. (90 degrees is 1/4 of a circle). A right-hand thread is generated by circling in a counterclockwise motions in conjunction with shifting the ‘Z’-axis up one pitch for each 360 degrees.

A left-hand thread is created by going around in a clockwise movement in conjunction with making the ‘Z’ axis up one pitch per 360 degrees. The whole series of actions can be reached by appending in a descending route and overturning the revolution route.

External threads need the major diameter milled to size before the thread mill is implemented. Right-hand threads are formed by moving up and in a counterclockwise direction. Identical threads are able to be cut by shifting down and switching the orbit route.

NPT threads are most often created at the same time moving the tool in a downward direction. Because these tools are crest cutting, it is not absolutely required to ream the internal minor diameter or mill the external diameter to size. Keep in mind, it is greatly recommended to do so because the tools will have a lesser amount material to remove. If the tool is to be used in an upward direction, spiral movement is required.
