You Just Bought A Steel Building - What Happens Next

You?ve done your shopping around and collected three or four quotes from different steel building companies. Out of all of the firms that sell steel buildings, you figure that you?ve picked the one that offers the lowest priced metal buildings, but at the same time you felt comfortable with the salesman and everything you discussed is on your purchase order for your steel barn. You?ve signed all of the paperwork and sent in the deposit. So now what? Almost every pre engineered building company operates the same way, using the same standards for time frames when it comes to receiving your drawings and your metal building.

Once you?ve finalized your steel garage order with the salesman or project coordinator assigned to you, you can expect to receive your permit/approval drawings in approximately three weeks. The permit drawings are engineer stamped for your state and are the set you take to your local building department if you need to get a building permit to erect your metal barn. If you purchased a foundation design, which can be added to steel building orders for an additional cost, that will arrive about two weeks after you receive your permit/approval drawings. Most companies require you to review the approval drawings then send in a written approval to move the steel garages into fabrication. The approval drawings are for your review and if any changes need to be made the firms that sell prefabricated buildings require that you mark up those drawings to show the changes that you need. If the changes are due to a mistake made by the steel building company, then those changes should be corrected free of any charges. If you are the one making changes to your original contract then you will be responsible for any costs associated with those changes.

You?ve made your steel building purchase, received your drawings and finally your building department has approved your application for a building permit to put up that steel barn on your property. Then you gave your approval to the factory to move your steel building into fabrication. So now what can you expect before the truck shows up?

In about two weeks you will receive the anchor bolt layout labeled ?for construction? so you can get started on your foundation. Now I must mention that the actual anchor bolts are not included with standard orders for metal buildings. A lot of people get confused when the salesperson tells them they will be getting an anchor bolt layout for their steel garage. They expect that the anchor bolts are included but they are not unless it?s stated in writing on the contract. Along with the anchor bolt layout, you will receive the fully detailed copies of your construction drawings. These drawings are more detailed than the ones you took to your building department, to help with the construction of the pre engineered buildings.

Soon after you will receive your estimated week of delivery. That estimated time usually falls about five to six weeks after you gave your approval to move your metal barn into fabrication, depending on where your job site is in relation to the steel buildings factory. Some companies that sell the prefabricated buildings ship them as commingled freight, meaning that if they have one or more orders going in the same direction or to the same state, they can pass the freight savings on to the customer.
